Friday Fun – Happy Birthday to Me!

34 years ago today…

Enter Me.

I love birthdays!  I really do.  My family was also very good at celebrating them.  It was the one day of the year that I felt moderately comfortable getting extra attention.

I’ve tried to analyze my love of celebrating my birthday.  Truth is I kind of feel guilty now as an adult for still wanting to make a big deal out of my birthday.  But I think I’ve pinpointed why I love them so much…

Birthdays are a little taste of freedom for me. As an achiever I’m always trying to win your approval and earn your respect.  My birthday is the one day you love and affirm me for just being me.

In addition to that, birthdays are a time for me to pause and reflect on what I’m doing with my life. Am I living my God-given potential?  Are there goals I need to set?  Dreams I need to accomplish?  People I need to pour into?

So here’s to birthdays!

When is your birthday and how do you like to celebrate it?

Friday Fun – Big City Style

Here is my Friday Fun in pictures.

Hilda and I are spending the weekend in New York City as our Christmas present to each other.  I’ve never been to New York at Christmas… so beautiful.

I’ll admit though, it’s FREEZING!!  We’ve been so cold, we haven’t taken a lot of pictures, but here are some places we’ve been so far!

Where is you favorite place to visit at Christmas time?

Friday Fun – Family Traditions

2009 xmas cookies

Today and yesterday my sis and I have been baking our first batch of Christmas cookies.  Don’t they look awesome?!!

They are!

These puppies are made from scratch from our grandmother’s recipe.  And when I say scratch, I mean get out the flour,   butter,   sugar,   rolling pin and   a few secret ingredients, and spend an entire day making this magic. By the end of the day we are usually so tired of cookie dough and icing that we never want to see another cookie again!  (That usually doesn’t last long, though.)

Our cookie baking tradition goes back a few generations.  Our dad’s mom is the originator of the recipes as far as we know.  (Unfortunately I don’t know if they were passed down from her mom or not.) Grandma Esch would invite her daughters and daughters-in-law over for a day of baking each Christmas season.  My mom then passed the recipes along to her mom, my Nanny, and Nanny took over the tradition of baking with Jes and I each year.  For years these cookies went unbaked once we grew up and left home.  Three years ago when Jes moved to Nashville we decided to institute “sister baking day” the first Thursday of December.  I can’t wait for the day Jes has kids and we pass the tradition on to them!

There is just something so precious about the memories created from holiday traditions.  I think the beauty of family traditions is in relishing the memories of traditions past, adapting some traditions to a new day, new family and new circumstances and creating new traditions along the way.

I’ll never recapture the exact tradition of baking with Nanny when I was a little girl, but the tradition of baking with my sister each year now is just as special.

What is one of your favorite holiday traditions?

Friday Fun – Connect with Your Inner Teenager

No Comments 21 November 2009

This post is coming a little late this weekend because my big Friday Fun carried over into the wee hours.  Yes, the wee hours!  I actually went to the 10:00 PM showing of “New Moon” last night.  I know… call me crazy! :)   I’m rarely still awake at 10 PM, let alone just going to see a movie.

So me and a few friends braved a theater full of giddy girls (and a few obnoxious ones) to see the movie we’ve been waiting for for months.  They saved the very front row for us! ;)

All in all, we had a great night.  I actually stayed awake for the entire movie.  Bella saved Edward.  Jacob was a believable rival.  The special effects for the wolves were cool.  And it ended with the proposal.  Everything I expected the movie to be.

One of my business friends told me earlier in the week, “I’m proud of you for connecting with your inner teenager.”  That’s exactly what I did.  For an evening I forgot the pressures of my busy world, the looming deadlines, the budgets that don’t balance and the huge “to do” list that I need to accomplish before Thanksgiving company arrives.  I just enjoyed a story.

I enjoyed the moment.

Sometimes I don’t do that enough.

When’s the last time you connected with your inner teenager?

Friday Fun – I Run for Treats

5 Comments 06 November 2009

Choc cake

I feel it.

You know that oh-no-here-come-the-holidays-I’m-going-to-gain-10 pounds-because-I-can’t-avoid-all-the-good-food-and-treats feeling.

Yep.  I felt it this morning while I was running because, well… I run for treats.  That’s my motto.  My selfish obsession with “thin” coupled with my love of food is enough to keep me motivated to workout a few hours every week.

It’s cold weather season, so what does that mean?  Comfort food.

I love comfort food.  A good pot roast with carrots, potatoes and gravy cooked in the crock pot so that I don’t even feel like I really cooked – yeah, that’s nearly heaven.

It’s also time for the holidays.  That means comfort food combined with lots of treats.  Seriously, does it get any better?

So yep, I’ll be lacing up the running shoes and hitting the pavement pretty frequently.  If you happen to see me just yell out “keep running for treats!”  It’s all the motivation I need. :)

What’s your favorite holiday treat?

It’s less than 24 hours ’til the big race!

I’m getting nervous excited.  Today is all about eating and resting.  Can’t complain about that really. ;)

Matt has challenged me to take a “Catron Cam” on the run tomorrow so that I can document for you all the events of my day.  I think I’m going to do it.  I know that I’ll have to sacrifice a few minutes of race time and energy to do this, so I’m trying to resign myself to not setting an aggressive finish time.

Here’s a few other things on my mind and in my plans today:

  • No long run with Ash this morning so I have extra time on my hands.  Planning to go for a nice walk to stretch out my legs and get some fresh air.
  • Still working on our 10th anniversary vacation.  My neighbor is a travel agent and she is finding us some great options.
  • Reviewing resumes for our Pastor of Spiritual Formation.  We’re looking for someone who has been at a church of 1000+ leading a small groups ministry for 5 or more years.  If you know of anyone who fits that criteria have them email their resume to me.
  • I finished the new book “The Noticer” by Andy Andrews and I’ll be blogging about it Monday.  The book releases Tuesday and you are going to want to buy it.  That’s all I’ll say for now!
  • Praying for Pete, Anne and the rest of the Compassion Bloggers as they head out to India today.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Friday Fun

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted Friday Fun, so here’s the latest:

  • My husband left the house WAYYYYY early this morning for work, so Mick (my dog) assumed it was time to get up… but instead I laid in bed and finished the novel that I’ve been reading,  I love the feeling of finishing a good book!
  • Ran 7 miles in Edwin Warner park with Ash today.  I’m having trouble getting my groove this year in training.
  • I could smell the sun today… really I could.
  • The squirrels were especially frisky today in the park.  They kept startling me during the run.  I think they have spring fever (me too!)
  • Grapefruit – my treat of choice after completing my run.  I LOVE grapefruit!
  • Talked to my dad.  First time in a few weeks that we actually got to talk instead of exchanging voicemails.
  • Working on a talk for a seminar at NRB this Sunday.  I’ll be part of a panel discussion with Matthew Paul Turner, Joe Sindorf and Michael Buckingham.  Looking forward to working with these guys.
  • Going to meet my friend Jan for tea this afternoon
  • Bought the new album from The Fray.  Anybody else have it yet? Whatcha think?
  • Get to hang out with some friends tonight – yay!

It’s a good day!
