My Dream

No Comments 25 January 2010

I’m a closet dreamer.

If you meet me you’ll encounter a very practical, problem solving, get-it-done, A-type, responsible individual.  But underneath that composed exterior are some dreams that have been brewing for years.  Dreams that excite me and yet scare me to death.  Dreams that if I shared with someone over a cup of tea I’m afraid they would laugh out loud with tea spraying from nose, mouth, ears and eyes or even worse, give me that blank stare complete with a placating “oh, that’s a nice idea honey.”

You know the kind of fear I’m talking about.

Do Something!

14 Comments 13 January 2010

If there is something wrong, those who have the ability to do something have a responsibility to do something.

I heard this quote a few weeks ago and immediately scribbled it down.  I can’t remember who said it, where they said it or what context it was in, but WHAT they said hit a nerve for me.

Isn’t it true that we have a tendency to always point out what’s wrong?  I’m such a critic!  I suppose that I get some satisfaction from noting imperfections because it makes me feel better about my ill attempts at being perfect.

And isn’t it so much more our nature to talk about what’s wrong rather than do something about what’s wrong?  As a culture, we have talk shows, media, water-cooler discussions, blogs, etc that give us an avenue to complain about the injustices we see, but what if we quit talking and just did something?

“If you have the ability to do something, you have the responsibility to do something.”

What do you see that’s “wrong”?

Maybe it’s poverty, clean water, politics, poor leadership, education, homelessness, an unruly child, you-fill-in-the-blank.

Each of us is drawn to seeing the “wrong” more strongly in one area or another.  That’s usually a good hint of what your God-given passion is.  Bill Hybels calls this your “Holy Discontent”.

What is it for you?

What is wrong that you have the ability to make right?  Take responsibility and do something!

My Prayer for You by Pete Wilson

Matthew 6:25-30

Three things that I am praying for you this year:

1) That you’ll have a great faith

I’m praying that there is one area of your life that you’ll step out and trust God in a big way.  That you’ll face something that completely terrifies you.

Our fears establish the limits of our life.  (If you fear failure, you just won’t try.  If you fear people, you’ll stay alone… etc.)

We have to combat our fears with faith.

Proverbs 3:5

Your problem isn’t fear, it’s a lack of faith.

Trust God for more this year.  Trust Him in a way you’ve never trusted him before.

2) That you’ll have greater purpose

We spend a majority of our time on things that just don’t matter.

If you don’t live like you believe your life is meant to change the world,  you’re missing the point of your salvation.

Acts 1:8

There is a big disconnect in the church between the hope of God and his purpose.

Missions is not a calling or program.  It’s the whole purpose of the church.

We want to learn more without applying anything.

If you want to see God, take his light to some dark places and see the hope of God at work.

Fight and push-back against the ego-driven, self-centered desires that control your life.

3) That you’ll have greater wisdom

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

********************

I’ll be praying for faith, purpose and wisdom for you too.

Is there something specific I can pray for you?

Who Are You?

What’s your brand?

In my former job I spent the majority of my time developing brand identities for artists.  I worked hard to determine the unique characteristics of the individual musician/band/singer and then figured out how to market that to set them apart from the rest of their competitors.  It was a fascinating, sometimes frustrating and yet, a very rewarding experience… especially when I felt like I captured the heart of the individual and got to share that with the world.

As much as the word “branding” sounds all-business, cold and impersonal, I really believe in the power of a brandMore importantly I believe in the power of understanding your unique brand.

My personal definition of branding is: authentically being who you are and portraying that consistently.

Each one of us has been uniquely gifted by God with certain strengths, talents, gifts, passions, etc.  And this unique combination makes up your personal brand.

I believe there is great power in understanding who you are and who God has uniquely made you to be.  Some of us have learned this well.  Others of us have allowed life/people/circumstances to shadow our innate interests and desires… sometimes to such a degree that it takes years for us to dig up what’s been buried so deep.

So, who are you?

What makes you uniquely you?

How would others describe you?

Better yet, how would you describe the real you?

What’s your brand and are you living it with passion?

If these questions stump you, frustrate you or paralyze you, I would challenge you to go on a journey to understand who God has created you to be.  Here are a few things I would recommend to get you started:

  1. Take a spiritual gifts assessment. This is a great tool to begin to help you unpack spiritual gifts as they are outlined in 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4.  Here are a couple of free online tests: Church Growth.org and First Baptist Huntsville
  2. Understand your strengths. Read Now, Discover Your Strengths or Strengths Finder 2.0 and take the Strengths Finder assessment.
  3. Develop a relationship with a mentor who can provide candid feedback, offer encouragement and coach you in your growth.
  4. Journal your thoughts and feelings… especially the moments where you feel alive and thriving.
  5. Pray for God to give you clarity, insight and passion for the purpose He has for your life.

One of my favorite passages of scripture is in Galatians 6 from The Message:

Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that.  Don’t be impressed with yourself.  Don’t compare yourself with others.  Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Be uniquely you!!

Are you ready to get started?

My notes from:

“Eternally Focused” by Blake Bergstrom

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23

The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.  W.M. Lewis

The situation is grave – we are going to die.  So I think we need to lighten up and live.

Really living is something that we decide to do.  Living is a choice.

God wants us to choose him above all else.

Mark 12:28

The heart is the center of our life.  It’s our nucleus, our identity.

Luke 16:14-15

God knows all of our desires.  He knows them and wants them.

Guard your heart – the enemy is a crafty deceiver.

Have you forgotten how to live?  Is a part of you crumbling because of some circumstance you’re facing?

Proverbs 14:12

“Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Your heart can not and will not be a wellspring of life if you are not guarding it.

“For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45

Decide to have joy in the midst of all your circumstances.  Joy is a choice.

The best way for your heart to be the wellspring of life is for you to live with the end in mind.

Psalm 39:4-5

Are you living?  What are you living for?

2 Corinthians 4:18

Why isn’t there a sense of urgency in the way we live?

Put your focus back on Jesus.

When your heart is centered and your desires are as they should be, your heart will be a wellspring of life.

Count your moments.  Live fully present, fully alive.

Your heart should be a wellspring of life… but not for you.  It’s for everyone around you.

Maybe, for you, guarding your heart is:

  • putting a block on your computer
  • having a conversation with the person you can’t get along with
  • to stop comparing yourself to everyone around you
  • to stop going for seconds and thirds – your binge eating is literally killing you
  • to quit obsessing over your stuff

How do you need to guard your heart today?

What can you do to live more fully alive?

Leading From the Second Chair

3 Comments 22 September 2009

Today’s post comes from friend and fellow leader Trisha Davis. Thoughts and insights on leading from the Second Chair.

I am so blessed and excited to be a guest writer on Jenni’s blog today! Jenni and I met 8 years ago when my husband Justin was on staff at the church she attended. We have recently reconnected as my husband took a job at Cross Point Church where Jenni serves as the Executive Director.

One thing that Jenni and I have in common is our passion for leadership. Each time we get together we enjoy deep discussions about how to be better leaders, how to help others be better leaders and what leaders are currently impacting our lives.

So you may be wondering what do I do for a living? What is my title…. Are you ready? Well sorry to disappoint you but I don’t have a title. I have always led from the SECOND CHAIR. Let me further explain. Justin has been a pastor for 13 yrs (you can read our story HERE). I have not only been his #2 leader at certain times in ministry, I have played that role for many other leaders without a title or pay. I have had offers and opportunities but for the past 13 years my primary focus has been being a full-time stay-at-home mom to my three awesome boys and a part-time/full-time leader from the second chair. So I am sure your are asking yourself… “then what does this chick know about leadership?”

Webster’s defines a leader as “Someone who leads.” Leadership is not defined by a title or the number of people you are leading. I have met many people that have big dreams or feel as if they don’t have a big enough dream that are either waiting for a title or a belief in themselves to make those dreams a reality. While they wait, they see others who are less gifted to lead take off in pursuit of their dreams. Often, frustration and defeat sets in and the once big dream has now turned into bitterness and resentment. While I don’t believe that all of us are wired to be CEOs or Executive Directors, I do believe that God has given all of us the gift to lead from the second chair!

Leading from the second chair for me has been birthed from two passions and three principles. I have a passion to help people find their way back to God AND to help them discover God’s purpose and plan for their lives. In order to make these passions a reality from the second chair, I have lived by these three principles:

  1. Leadership is about influence and using that influence to spur others toward a common goal.
  2. Leading from the second chair eventually requires you to learn to lead from the first chair or to submit to someone else’s leadership.
  3. A GOOD leader leads… a GREAT leader teaches others to lead.

I have had the privilege to see first hand three women who lead from the second chair although there are many more I could write about! Angie has taken her pain of loss and grief and turned into a website and soon to be book. Although she is not counseling every person that’s on a similar journey, from the second chair she has provided encouragement, affirmation and hope! She and her best friend  Jessica also started a book club to provide further encouragement! My dear friend Brandi’s second chair leadership has MANY different facets, but one of my favorites is her blog. She uses her second chair to inspire, encourage and just make people laugh, that yes, even pastors’ families aren’t perfect.

Any further insights or experience you have had in leading from the second chair?

Feeling Responsible

6 Comments 09 September 2009

“Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that.  Don’t be impressed with yourself.  Don’t compare yourself with others.  Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.”

Galatians 6:4-5 (The Message)

I don’t know about you but there are seasons of my life where I feel like God gives me a word to live with, wrestle with, process and apply to my life.  Lately that word has been “responsibility”.  I’ve been overwhelmed by the responsibility that God has entrusted me with.  I feel the weight of the decisions I make and the influence I have every day.  And I can’t shake the immense responsibility I feel.

This passage from Galatians has almost become like a life verse in this season of my life.  It summarizes what I feel like God is speaking directly to me these days.

  • Explore who I am and God’s calling on my life
  • Dive into that calling
  • Don’t become prideful
  • Don’t compare myself with others
  • Take responsibility
  • Do the best with the life/gifts/influence God has given me

Is there a word that God has been speaking to you lately?

Cultive logo final

I’m excited to announce that one week from today I’m launching something that has been on my heart for years.

I’ve shared with you before that I feel like God has called and gifted me to lead leaders, however I feel that he’s also given me a responsibility to specifically encourage, support and empower other women leaders.  Honestly, I’ve battled that second part for some time now.  Pridefully I’ve wanted to be known as a great leader, not just a great female leader… so much so that I’ve been reluctant to niche myself specifically to females in leadership.

After continually battling this with God and then getting a swift kick in the pants from my sister who said “just do it already!”, I’m launching Cultivate Her.

Cultivate Her is a leadership environment where women are inspired, challenged and encouraged in their leadership growth.  No matter what your leadership influence looks like, your gifts will be cultivated to encourage you to embrace our motto “wherever you lead, lead well”!

Cultivate Her will be a monthly gathering in Nashville.  Our first event is:

Friday, September 11th

7:00-8:30 AM

The Cafe at Cross Point

If you are interested in joining us, you can RSVP HERE!

I need to say a BIG THANKS in advance to the Cultivate Her planning team that has toiled with me for months over this event.  Lindsey, Ashley, Hilda, Trisha, Sarah, Eve & Kat – I love you guys and am blessed to lead beside you!

**Logo design by TexaSUS Design.  Go check out her work – she’s amazing!

PS – The Cultivate Her website is still under construction.  I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s officially launched.

DNA

DNA – Week 3 “Acting” by Pete Wilson

** It was such a big day at Cross Point Nashville today.  My notes don’t really do this message justice so be sure to go online and watch/listen once it’s posted.

Matthew 28:16-20

“Go and make disciples of all nations” – This statement is why we as a church can not stop trying to reach the world.

The idea of going to all the nations seems like a big overstatement because we’re not even reaching our own cul-de-sacs.

Mark 2:16-17

We’re growing as a church because of the influence you have with neighbors and friends and family.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

In 2010 we are launching Cross Point Bellevue!

Beginning Sept 13th all of our campuses will have live teaching via video.

Why don’t we do what normal churches do and build a big building?

There are 3 reasons why we feel like we are called to multi-site strategy

1) New churches reach new people

2) We can do this for a fraction of the cost

3) It gives people increased opportunity for leadership and service in ministry (the larger we grow the easier it is for people to hide out and not serve)

People are our most important resources.

Planting two new campuses in 6 months is going to provide plenty of opportunities for you to serve.

“The purpose of influence is to speak up for people who have no influence.” Rick Warren

Somebody has to be compassionate and courageous to help those without influence, those who have no voice.

Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do good.  Seek justice.  Help the oppressed.  Defend the cause of orphans.  Fight for the rights of widows.”

God’s plan has always been YOU!  It has always been the church.

How are we doing that?

  1. Building a church and feeding center in the Dominican Republic
  2. Medical missions efforts in Honduras
  3. Starting a school & feeding center in India
  4. Launching ministries from a downtown Nashville location that will reach out to people who may never enter the doors of our church

We all have a tendency to invest our lives in temporary things.

The best this world has to offer is all temporary.  You can invest your life in those things or you can invest in things that are eternal.

Eternal = love God, love people

Next steps:

1) Pray for all of our campuses

2) Keep inviting your unchurched friends

3) Serve – get involved

We partner together to create environments where only God can do what God can do.

I hope you’ll be a part of it!

Church Lady

33 Comments 12 August 2009

church_lady

I’m a chick in church leadership.

Yep, there I said it.  Kinda stating the obvious I know, but I’ve been dragging my feet about really engaging this topic.

I have such a passion for gender to not be the polarizing issue that it tends to be in the church and yet I’ve been afraid to really engage it.  If I’m honest I’m fearful that I’ll get pegged as the “church leader chick” and I won’t earn credibility with my male counterparts.  I’m afraid that I’ll ruffle some of your feathers because I have pretty strong, passionate views on the issue.  I’m afraid that some of you won’t take me seriously because I’m a woman and you’ll think I’m just trying to promote an agenda.  My list of excuses and fears goes on and on…

But…

I can’t seem to escape it.

More and more young women in leadership reach out to me to talk about my role and how I navigate it as a woman.  More frequently I’m talking to male leaders who are trying to figure out how to involve women more effectively in leadership positions.  And every day my beliefs, passions and convictions grow, forcing me to evaluate how I’m supposed to use this influence.

I believe I am called to lead leaders (regardless of gender), but I also feel that I have a responsibility to encourage, support and champion female leaders.  I sense that God has given me this role of influence to use wisely in helping to pave the way for leaders who will come after me.  (And just to make sure I got the message, God strategically used my own Pastor to reinforce this with his message on Esther a couple of weeks ago.)

So, I’m really praying and seeking God about what this means.  I have some ideas brewing and am having strategic conversations with peers, friends and mentors.  But I would love to know from you:

What do you believe is the most pressing issue for women in church leadership?
