Random Leadership Observation

4 Comments 27 October 2008

Good Monday Morning!  Here’s one of my random leadership observations to get your week off to a good start:

People are not predictable.  You can’t control them – quit trying!  Set up systems and boundaries but be willing to create flexibility for how things get done within those boundaries.  You will wear yourself out and those around you if you try to manage too tightly.

Agree?  Disagree?  Elaborate?

Bonus: Here are two great posts I read about leadership within the last week from two church leaders that I hugely admire:

Tony Morgan wrote about team attitudes and motivation.

Jeff Henderson wrote about leading through the current econmic challenges.

    agreed

great leaders are great at setting the boundaries according to the situation or type of work

there are some types of work where standardization & consistency are important. in those cases, tighter boundaries might be needed

there are other types of work where creativity & innovation are more important. in those cases, wider boundaries make sense

I LOVE this quote, Jen. I think that I agree, too… I think that I am less productive/creative when I feel smothered by people trying to control every single little thing that I do. I agree that there is a need for boundaries and expectations… but it’s amazing how much work can get done if people are willing to be flexible!

  3. I have nothing to elaborate. I’m pretty happy with that quote, and the two posts you linked to . . .

I agree. Not only are people different, life is uncontrollable…….and we, as humans, live life. We need to remain somewhat flexible and allow our “rules and systems” (which I enjoy because it brings continuity to my teams) to serve us instead of us serving them. Perhaps a good question to pose when there is a question is “What is loving?”.
